This week's Painting
Finished or not
"Distant Bridge", 8" x 11" transparent watercolor on Arches 140 lb cp. This was the view from the window of our hotel room on Chincoteague Bay about a week ago. The sunset across the Bay made the entire scene briefly orange and violet. Watercolors are often quick affairs, sometimes less than an hour from start to finish. This is one of those, a quick note that records a memory. "Across the Channel" 7" x 10" transparent watercolor on Arches 140 lb cp. Finished, this is a view from Chincoteague Island, across Assateague Channel and Sheepshead Creek, towards Assateague Light. This little house sits way out in the marshes along Sheepshead Creek, with a great view across the water towards Assateague Island. Finished in the studio after a recent visit to Chincoteague. "Chincoteague Lighthouse", 7" x 10" Transparent watercolor Not even close to finished, this little watercolor sketch was something I began working while on Chincoteague last weekend, and fiddled around with briefly this evening after school. Contrast and texture need to be punched up still, before I put it down. Can't wait until Summer break, when I can have more time to paint while the sun's out. "Chincoteague Holly" 11"x14", watercolor and Gouache, mounted on board and waxed. I was down on Chincoteague Island last week, started this painting there and finished in studio. Saw this on a little side street in Chincoteague, an American Ibis looking for bugs in a little overgrown cemetery. What struck me was the huge American Holly tree that dominated the little group of headstones and tiny wooden cross. The ibis was just another plus in the scene. I painted this on a piece of 140 lb cold press Arches paper, mounted on a board. I love the rigidity provided by the mounting process. I'll wax the paper before framing it. This one is done. This one's going to be called "April Moon." Watercolor and Egg Tempera on Claybord. 12" x 16" Started as a Plein Air painting, studio work is finishing it up, a bit at a time. I'm not yet happy with the silhouetted trees in the foreground, and know that the pines in the background need more contrast. Because this is painted on Claybord, when it is finished it will be varnished, rather than matted and framed under glass. I like the way these paintings feel, without the glare of glass and color of the mats taking away from the image.
