Natural World Watercolors and Egg Temperas
Saw-Whet in the Snow, original transparent watercolor, framed, 28" x 36". In this watercolor, I wanted to capture the coldness of that wintery morning, but maintain the warmth of this calm little owl.
This is a Saw-Whet Owl, the smallest owl in Maryland, and the smallest owl found across much of North America. I have seen these owls a number of times, usually in December as they migrate down the Eastern Shore. These little birds are very tame, and can be approached quite closely before they fly. Adkins Arboretum, near my studio, bands these little owls each year, catching dozens of them during their migration. 1250.00, framed.
Three Threes on Trees, original transparent watercolor, framed, 16" x 20". A true transparent watercolor, this painting includes no white pigment. In this sort of painting, I built up layers of progressively darker and darker pigment, reserving the lighter colors as I went.
In this painting, I used an old pecan tree in my yard as the jumping-off point. The tree is frequented by Gray Tree Frogs, who hunt for moths among the Virginia Creeper that covers large parts of the craggy bark. I painted that scene, adding three of each. 985.00
This watercolor combines a quickly-painted, very "brushy" background with a meticulously detailed foreground. I like combining loose and detailed elements in my paintings, because it allows me to be more expressive.
This is a painting of a relatively rare bird, a Loggerhead Shrike. I like this bird. A songbird, it is also a bird of prey, chasing down small animals on foot. It frequents thorny shrubs and small trees. I painted this Shrike in a Hawthorn tree. 1150.00
Watercolor Landscapes
Crows on Holly, original transparent watercolor, 18" x 24". This painting was completed very rapidly, with minimal brush strokes. This is the kind of painting I complete on location. In this case, I was painting an abandoned home on Holly Road. 650.00, framed.
Stop in the Fog, original transparent watercolor, framed, 22" x 28" This scene materialized from a foggy morning a few months ago, as a dirt road near my studio was enveloped in a thick morning mist. SOLD.
Abstract Images
This particular painting is about five-lined skinks, one of several small lizards common in our area. This species has a blue tail, and can often be seen scramling about the foundation of my studio. 875.00, framed.
