...Welcome

...To the World Of Kurt Plinke's
Delicate Natural Images.

So many people today
seem to have lost touch with our rural past and the natural world.  To many, it seems that even the small  natural places of only a few years ago have become a faraway  forgotten realm.

Despite the clamor to "go green" and to "save the planet," most Americans spend very little time actually observing the world around them.
Kurt Plinke is one of those people who has not forgotten to keep in touch with the natural world.  Living on Maryland's Eastern Shore, he tries to move in time with the seasons, and records what he sees in his intricate watercolors and egg tempera paintings.

Many of his images are created from memory or imagination, others are painted on site and out-of-doors.  Often, Kurt hides images and messages within his compositions, creating deeper meaning in his pieces.

A New Direction

Picture
Kurt has recently begun experimenting with transparent watercolors on a surface other than traditional paper.  Claybord, a product made by Ampersand, is a rigid Masonite-like board, coated in a thin but durable clay surface.  Kurt applies transparent watercolor to the surface, using washes, wet-in-wet and techniques similar to egg tempera.  After the painting is finished, the board is varnished, sealing the painting to the board.  Because of this, the painting does not require framing or matting.
Like egg tempera, the surface seems to "glow," with a depth that is difficult to acheive with other mediums.  It also has a feeling of spontaneity that can be seen in many watercolors.

This painting, "Up From Choptank," is one of these experimental paintings.  Follow this link to see more watercolors on this interesting surface:  Watercolors on Board.
