So many people today seem to have lost touch with our rural past and the natural world. To many, it seems that even the small natural places of only a few years ago have become a faraway forgotten realm.
Despite the clamor to "go green" and to "save the planet," most Americans spend very little time actually observing the world around them. Kurt Plinke is one of those people who has not forgotten to keep in touch with the natural world. Living on Maryland's Eastern Shore, he tries to move in time with the seasons, and records what he sees in his intricate watercolors and egg tempera paintings.
Many of his images are created from memory or imagination, others are painted on site and out-of-doors. Often, Kurt hides images and messages within his compositions, creating deeper meaning in his pieces.
A New Direction
Like traditional egg tempera, the layered surface seems to glow with a depth that is difficult to achieve with other mediums. The addition of the transparent watercolor adds a feeling of spontaneity that can be seen in many watercolors.
This painting, "Up From Choptank," is one of these experimental paintings.
